Birthstones - May
Emerald Mohs Hardness: 7.5-8 Specific Gravity: 2.72 Refractive Index: 1.577-1.583
Emerald is the birthstone for May and also the gemstone designated for the 20th and 35th anniversaries. The name "emerald" comes from the Greek "smaragdos," which means "green stone." Emerald is the deep green variety of beryl, and its beautiful green color is due to traces of chromium or vanadium replacing the aluminum in the beryl structure. When evaluating emeralds, color is the most important quality factor. Included crystals and cavities are not an issue, unless they weaken the stone or cause it to appear cloudy or muddy. In fact, emerald inclusions (internal growth characteristics of the gem often seen as crystals and/or whitish cloudy areas) often create a graceful, branch-like pattern known as a "jardin" (French for "garden").
There are many sophisticated techniques with which to improve the clarity of emeralds. In addition to oils and waxes, there are now clear synthetic resins that are sometimes applied to an emerald to seal surface fractures. Some of these treatments are not permanent, and may need to be reapplied every few years.
Today, the top emerald producing countries are Colombia, Zambia, Brazil and Zimbabwe.
Care & Cleaning of Emeralds
The incredible beauty of your emerald will last forever, if it is properly cared for. As with all gems, protect emerald from scratches and sharp blows, as they are somewhat brittle and susceptible to damage from an impact that might cause them to chip or crack. Use only mild soap and lukewarm water and a soft brush to clean your emerald jewelry. Never place it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner or steam cleaner. Be sure to rinse and dry your jewelry thoroughly after cleaning. We suggest that you bring your jewelry to Gillespie Jewelers at least three times each year for a complimentary inspection and cleaning.
