Ruby

Mohs Hardness: 9
Specific Gravity: 4
Refractive Index: 1.76-1.77

Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July and the gemstone representing the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.

Ruby, the red variety of corundum, is one of the world's most valuable gemstones. The name ruby comes from the Latin "ruber," which means "red." A ruby's color is due to traces of chromic oxide, and the amount of the oxide present determines the depth of color in the gemstone. Most gemstone authorities expect a medium to medium dark color tone in a ruby, and stones that are lighter are called pink sapphire - but there is no general agreement exactly where that line is to be drawn. Corundum is the second hardest natural mineral known to mankind - only diamond is harder. Because of its hardness and durability, ruby is an excellent choice for all types of jewelry.

Like sapphire, ruby may be found in a translucent variety that displays a six-rayed star which seems to magically glide across the surface of the moving stone when the gem is cut into a cabochon (dome) shape. Inclusions of tiny, slender, parallel rutile needles cause this characteristic, which is known as "asterism." Star rubies are expensive rarities. Their value is determined according to their beauty and color, while transparency is a secondary consideration.

Care & Cleaning of Rubies

The beautiful color of your ruby will last indefinitely, if the gem is properly cared for. As with all gems, protect ruby from scratches and sharp blows. Ruby may be cleaned in a home ultrasonic machine, or you may use mild soap and water using a soft brush. Be sure to rinse and dry your jewelry thoroughly after cleaning. We suggest that you bring your jewelry to Gillespie Jewelers at least three times each year for a complimentary inspection and cleaning.
